Hilbert College Alumni Association End-of-Year Report December 21, 2007 Submitted by Amy M. Bartz, President As 2007 comes to a close, the Alumni Association has engaged in several accomplishments and continues to strive to make even more progress in the upcoming year. The dedicated board persists to work on ways to provide both professional and social programming for all alumni and to support the college as it consistently grows and transforms. One of the boards’ biggest accomplishments this year is the privilege of having the President of the Association be an honorary member of the Board of Trustees of the college. This gives the Alumni Association the ability to work collectively with the Board of Trustees to offer support and guidance for the future of the campus environment. Next, we assisted with the phone-a-thon to help raise essential financial support for the Annual Fund. We also took the time to celebrate with the senior class at a happy hour social marking the graduates “100 days until Graduation.” We had the exciting opportunity to join a couple of the members of the Institutional Advancement Committee of the college and the new President of Hilbert, Dr. Cynthia Zane, for dinner at the Dove Restaurant. The dinner gave us the ability to review the future of the Association, as well as looking forward to the future direction of the college. As we headed into Spring, we hosted a Professional Success program which assists students with the skills necessary to enter the workforce. This gives members of the Association an opportunity to conduct workshops, provide networking advice, and offer personal experiences to the graduating students looking for employment. We were also involved in the Accepted Students Reception and volunteered our time at the Hilbert College Scholarship Golf Tournament. We celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the College and the Inauguration of the new President of Hilbert College. The Alumni Association presented Dr. Zane with the college’s first “Hilbert College” flag to be displayed proudly on the campus flagpole. It was a distinguished honor to be a part of this momentous occasion and to offer congratulations to Dr. Zane for taking on this vital leadership role. One of our biggest annual events, the Baccalaureate Brunch, was an overwhelming success. John Kordrupel, 2006 Alumni Award Recipient, chaired this event. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate with the future graduates and welcome them into the Alumni Association. The Kimberly Bruch Raczkowski Award was given to Mariya Balicki. It is always a challenge to determine one recipient from the number of qualified candidates. As President of the Association, is was a great honor to present this award at Commencement and speak to the entire graduating class in welcoming them to our distinguished Association. Over the summer, we hosted our annual Friday Night Bash with the Buffalo Bisons at Dunn Tire Park. The committee was chaired by Jerry Wszalek ’73 and the event has become one of our most successful alumni gatherings. Under the leadership of Brenda Ellis, our fundraising committee once again organized the Enjoy the City coupon books which are always a beneficial opportunity for the Association. We are also planning on hosting a Lenten Fish Fry Dinner, as an additional fundraising effort. During the fall, we participated in the “Light the Night Walk” in memory of Kimberly Bruch Raczkowski, for whom our Alumni Award is named in honor of at Graduation. Our team raised over $600 for this worthwhile cause. We celebrated Hilbert’s 50th anniversary with a fun-filled weekend of events for alumni, students, and their families. This special weekend gave Hilbert Alumni an opportunity to “Come Home to Hilbert” and observe all the spectacular changes that have taken place on the campus. In September, the Association struggled with the passing of Dominique Gibson Thompson, who was a committed Hilbert Association member and Vice President. We expressed sincere sympathy to the family by holding a memorial service in the Sister Adrienne Plaza of the campus. We hold our memories of her close to our hearts and continue to pray for Dominique’s family. With the Kresge Challenge in full swing and the need to make strict fundraising deadlines, the Alumni Association assisted with the end-of-year phone-a-thon. It is important with this challenge to meet the goal, otherwise, the Kresge foundation doesn’t give any support for our raised funds and the college would have to raise these funds themselves. Our last effort this year, as an Association, was to increase the Board’s active involvement to 100% in the efforts of contributing to the Annual Fund by requiring yearly gift from each member. A proposal was created and brought before the Board for approval and will go into effect during the upcoming year. This commitment will exemplify the prestige, honor, and value of the current Board positions. As the year comes to a close, my first year as President has come to an end. I have enjoyed working with a wonderful and dedicated group of Alumni members. I am looking forward to a busy 2008, eager to see how much more we can accomplish as a group. As always, I hope to see more Alumni, “Come Home to Hilbert.”

Do you know the history of your alma mater? The college is named after Mother Colette Hilbert, who established a new community of women religious in the United States in 1897. In 1957 this community founded a teacher training college for its members. The enrollment was expanded to include men in 1969. Check out more information on Hilbert’s history and mission in our About Hilbert section. Keep the Franciscan spirit strong!
For those interested in continuing their career, check out the Bonaventure Advantage Program! Recent Hilbert grads are eligible for a scholarship to help make continuing education a little easier. Contact the St. Bonaventure Buffalo Center at 716-646-1500 for more information, or visit SBU online.
