About the Human Services Program

Offering an integrated curriculum, Hilbert's bachelor-level human services major prepares you with a firm foundation in counseling, ethics, interpersonal communication, effective interviewing, and the treatment of problems affecting individuals, families and communities. It's designed to give you a broad understanding of the human services profession and a strong liberal arts base, while also providing you the skills, knowledge and values you need to work with a diverse group of people. Beyond this, the human services program helps refine your communication and interpersonal skills and professional techniques in areas like crisis intervention and case management.

Depending on your interests and career goals, you may select one of our six concentrations, offering you flexibility to pursue a career as a generalist or to choose a specialty in substance abuse/chemical dependency, law and human services, child and family practice, family violence, or rehabilitation services.

Our human services faculty represents a broad range of professional backgrounds and academic orientations. Our professors bring a depth of theoretical and practical experience to the classroom from all areas of the field, and encourage open, lively discussions about some of the most challenging issues today in the human services field.

You'll have the opportunity to gain practical experience through our outstanding internship program, allowing you to integrate principles and concepts discovered in the classroom with the real human services field. As a student-intern, you'll gain valuable insights and knowledge at places like drug and alcohol rehabilitation units, schools, public social services agencies, and hospitals, among many other sites.

Beyond this, you'll have a chance to excel in your future career through membership in the Human Services Association, where you'll discuss ideas, current events and careers in human services, and network with professionals. There's also the opportunity to hold forums with guest speakers, attend conferences and workshops, and explore issues of relevance to the human services profession.

Many graduates of Hilbert's program move directly into entry-level positions as human services professionals in agencies and organizations, while others choose further study in a range of graduate-level programs in areas like school and rehabilitation counseling, psychology, sociology and social work.

To accommodate your needs, a two-year human services degree is also offered at Hilbert. The flexibility of the associate-level degree allows you to enter the human services field or continue your studies in a bachelor-level program.
