HAMBURG, N.Y. – A presentation by international photographer and artist Marla Mossman on her expedition to Afghanistan as part of a remarkable multi-year journey photographing the ancient Silk Road will be held as part of the Hilbert College Visiting Artist Series.

Showcasing photos that capture the country’s cultural and religious heritage, “Peace Caravan: Journey Along the Silk Road in Afghanistan” will be held at 7:30 p.m. March 24 in Hilbert’s William E. Swan Auditorium.

Mossman’s quest to explore and document the Silk Road, an ancient trade route from Jerusalem to X’ian, China, took her to Afghanistan in 2005 where she photographed the people in their daily lives and wrote about her experiences of the people she encountered. She was the first foreigner and woman to visit Waras, a remote part of central Afghanistan.

Oftentimes traveling by foot, horse and even camel, Mossman’s “Peace Caravan” photography project has also included expeditions to India, Turkey and the Middle Eastern countries of Syria, Jordan and Israel, with other expeditions planned to additional countries. This 21st century traveling caravan follows the path, cultures and traditions of the Silk Road as it’s been for more than 2,500 years.

Mossman has traveled extensively documenting the human condition for more than 20 years. She is co-founder of ImagineAsia, which provides education and health care to rural Asian communities.

A proponent of arts and education, she co-established MMArts in London and Art Soup in Santa Barbara, Calif., both of which developed permanent exhibition spaces for local artists.

The Visiting Artist event is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the Hilbert English Department.
Advance registration is requested by contacting Anthony Hughes, Ph.D., at 926-8856, or e-mail hughes@hilbert.edu.
