    Description:

Dr. Scott L. Johnson serves Buffalo State as the Dean of University College and Associate Vice President for Undergraduate Education.  He will present "A CHARGE TO KEEP" to complement te upcoming film series Race - the Power of An Illusion.

Abstract:  The election of President Barack Obama provoked new discussions about the progress of this nation from its racist past to the current day, even prompting some to declare his election the fulfillment of Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream. While it is clear that society has dismantled many overtly racist practices, debate continues as to the existence and impact of racial inequalities. How do we use our understanding of where we have been to help us arrive where we aspire to go? What are meaningful strategies for moving society to that place? This presentation will discuss the history of race in the U.S., focusing on the creation and maintenance of racial inequalities through legal and cultural agents of legitimization. It will conclude with a discussion of meaningful strategies for overcoming the legacy of racial inequality and substantiating equality for all people.
