Smith is an authority on the history of American literature, major writers throughout various periods, and the ways social and political forces have shaped the country’s literary texts. Her other interest includes ethnic literature and the important relationship between storytelling and ethnic identity. She’s well versed on the works of contemporary ethnic writers Toni Morrison and Leslie Marmon Silko, among others. Director of Hilbert’s professional communications concentration, Smith can address communication theory, professional writing and speaking skills. She’s a member of the American Studies Association, Modern Language Association, Society for the Study of Multi-Ethnic Literature of the United States, and the Society for the Study of Narrative Literature.
