April 2013 Athlete of the Month

Sean Purtill and Mark Wagner

Sean Purtill and William “Mark” Wagner, from the men’s lacrosse team, were named Hilbert College’s Co-Student-Athletes of the Month for April, 2013. Both athletes were instrumental in the success the men’s lacrosse team experienced in April securing their first post-season play-off bid in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) tournament and continuing on to play in the championship game in only their second year of participation.

Purtill (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) led the Hawks with 42 points scoring 19 goals during the 5-2 month. The attack man was named the NEAC Offensive Player of the Week twice in April, and he became the first Hilbert student-athlete to earn POW honors three times in one season. Purtill's big game in April was 9 points (3g/6a) in the Hawks sudden death over-time loss to Medaille. He averaged 6 points a game in April. Purtill captured the NEAC leading point scorer title at the completion of the regular season, finishing with 73 points. At the end of April, he was ranked 8th in ppg; 37th in gpg; and 10th in apg in the May 1st NCAA national rankings.

Wagner (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) protected the netting and controlled the crease in front of the frame as Hilbert's primary goalie. He carried the Hawks through seven games, and played 393:34 minutes during the month. Wagner made 42 saves (.353%) after facing 205 shots. The sophomore keeper finished the month ranked 118th in goals-against-average (10.61) and 144th in saves per game (8.85). Wagner opened the season with back-to-back NEAC Defensive Player of the Week selections in March.
