HAMBURG, NY: In the second meeting of the season, D’Youville College ran away with the victory over Hilbert College in women’s basketball. Both teams battled through sloppy play and poor shooting, but the Spartans (5-15, 5-11) came out strong in the second half to extend their 15 point lead and cruise to the 77-45 victory.
All eight players on the Hawks roster contributed in the scoring column and rebounding. Sophomore Mary Zinni (Batavia, NY/Batavia) was the leading scorer again with 13 points while sophomore Amanda Dudek (Tonawanda, NY/Tonawanda) {photo to right} played her most active game tonight scoring 8 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in the loss. The Hawks (0-22, 0-17) went to the foul line 35 times but only shot 49% from the charity stripe.
Senior Melissa Kanalley (Tonawanda, NY/Cardinal O’Hara) hit for 20 points and junior Holly Beats (Marilla, NY/Iroquois) produced a double double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. The Spartans held a 60-45 rebounding advantage.
The last home game for the Hawks is Saturday, February 13 with a 1 pm tip against Mt. Aloysius College. The women’s team will be participating in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s PINKZONE celebration. All WBCA members are encouraged to raise cancer screening awareness on each of their campuses. The team will be selling PINKZONE t-shirts to assist in the nationwide cause.
