Hilbert Gives A Good Scare To Medaille

Hamburg, NY – In their best match played to date, the Hilbert College men’s volleyball team gave Medaille College a run for their money March 18. The Hawks lost in three sets (25-23, 27-25, 25-22) yet did not play like a 1-22 (0-9 UVC) club against the number 9 ranked team in the AVCA National Volleyball poll. Hilbert hung around in each of the sets fighting for every opportunity to grab a win but Medaille’s strength at the net proved to be too much for the Hawks to overcome. With a brief pre-game ceremony to honor Hilbert’s two seniors, Dan Wolfe and RJ Sykora, the Hawks played inspired volleyball hitting a season-high .306 with a season low nine errors on the match.  

Wolfe (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) had 9 kills (.320) and a team-high 10 digs while Sykora (Stow, OH/Stow Munroe Falls) passed for game- high 33 assists and added 5 digs and 2 blocks. Also hitting well for the Hawks was freshman Adam Weaver (Stow, OH/Archbishop Hoban) with game-high 21 kills in 42 attempts (.405). Sophomore Anthony Blasz (Eden, NY/Eden) contributed at the net with 4 blocks (9 digs) as did Fred Sickau (Eden, NY/Eden) with 4 blocks.

Medaille (20-4, 8-1 UVC) finished the game hitting .351 from the floor (50 kills/16 errors/97 attempts) and was led by Erin Kelly’s 16 kills in 23 attempts (no errors) and Aaron Woomer’s 22 assists.

The Hawks travel to North Buffalo March 19 to play EMU at 1pm on the Medaille College campus. They finish their season March 23 when they travel to Elmira College.
