Erie, PA – In the first game of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference double header, Penn State Behrend took the game in extra innings over the visiting Hilbert Hawks, 2-1. In the nightcap, the Lions were consistant at the plate and just pushed runs home en route to a 15-2 final improving to 11-3 and 4-0 in league play.
Nick Sherman (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) went the distance on the mound giving up 11 hits and striking out 7 for Hilbert (1-8). Behrend stranded 11 runners on base and didn’t break into the scoring column until the bottom of the ninth. The Hawks had three hits for the game; Ryan Fleet (Addison, NY/Addison) singled in the 6th and Frank Mancuso (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) singled in the 8th before St. Francis high school’s Chris Hoak whacked one in the top of the 9th inning sending Ryan LaCorte (Cheektowaga, NY/JFK) home for the first score of the game.
Behrend’s Josh Barbara and Ryan Kragnes hit singles in the bottom of the 9th and worked their way around the bags before Ed Kessler’s walk created a full diamond. Geoff Lang’s single (RBI) to left field sent the tying run home. Evan Bukowski’s RBI single won the game for Behrend.
In the 4pm game, the Lions crossed the plate at least once in five of the six innings they batted. Hilbert went through six pitchers with Dave Haseley (Sanborn, NY/Niagara Wheatfield) taking his second loss for the season. Chris Hoak and Jim Pernick (Tonawanda, NY/St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute) each had an RBI sending LaCorte and Joey Juszkiewicz (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) home for the two Hawk runs. Behrend’s Matt Bittner was 2 for 3 and had 7RB’s in the late game.
Hilbert (1-9, 0-2) hopes to host Penn State Altoona this Saturday, April 2 in a 1pm double header.
