2010-2011 Season Review: With four new faces on the very experienced coaching staff, the women’s basketball team started the season with high hopes and a full roster. The Hawks stat-line improved from the previous season, the roster size increased and the team was able to break into win column but by the end of February, no one was satisfied with the outcome of the year.
Hilbert opened the season at the cross-town Betty Abgott Invitational Tournament hosted by Buffalo State College. The Hawks faced off against the host school and then battled The Sages in the consolation game before heading to NYC in search of their first win of the season. On November 23, 2010, Hilbert won their first game of the season against The College of New Rochelle (69-36) and broke the eighty-one game losing streak that extended over four seasons. Following that win, the Hawks faced three more non-conference opponents (Alfred, Houghton and Nazareth) before heading into the holiday break without another victory.
Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play began the first week in December and continued on into the second semester without the Hawks capturing another win. The 0-18 conference slate was a rough go for the basketball squad and the coaches. They put the same amount of time preparing and working on skill-improvement as any other AMCC team, but with a low second-semester roster number, the pure length of the two-semester season took its toll on the crew.
By measuring game statistics it is apparent that the Hawks (1-23, 0-18) showed signs of improvement. Several categories showed growth: Hilbert had more assists, more blocked-shots, more steals while committing fewer turnovers all of which resulted in an improved shooting percentage transferring over to a higher points per game average (while holding their opponents to fewer points per game); the same is true with an improved number of rebounds per game – the Hawks limited their opponents to fewer rebounds per game.
Individually, two players averaged double-digit scoring for the season. Junior Julie Bossard (Arkport, NY/Canisteo-Greenwood) led the Hawks with 10.7 points per game for the full season; junior college transfer Magen Campbell (Buffalo, NY/Bennett/ECC) led the squad in her fall semester at Hilbert with 14.6 ppg. Bossard, the only player to start all 24 games for the Hawks, was named to the 3rd team AMCC All-Conference voted on by all the league coaches for her scoring, rebounding (8.6 rpg) and blocked shots (59) for the season. In the final 2010-11 NCAA Division III national statistics, Bossard ranked #35 with 2.5 blocks per game.
With the expected return of several seasoned sophomores and first year players, coach Peterson and his staff anticipate the 2011 incoming freshman to complement the team’s efforts of working towards qualifying for the AMCC play-offs and beyond.
