OBERLIN, OH - Oberlin College grabbed a 56-47 non-conference victory over the visiting Hilbert Hawks (1-3) in men’s basketball November 22. The Yeomen’s second half execution pressured Hilbert into missed shots and fouls as they improve to 2-2 before the holiday break. Josh Merritt and Andrew Fox tied for game high honors, each scoring 17 points for Oberlin. Fox finished the with the game’s only double-double after he cleared the boards with 14 rebounds. Hilbert’s Chris Parrott scored 13 points, one better than teammate Dan McFarland, and they both grabbed six rebounds.
Jordan VanDunk’s layup gave the Hawks their first lead in the game (22-21) at 8:05 in the first half. His bucket was followed by McFarland and Parrott’s layup scores which built the advantage to four, but a combination of missed cues by Hilbert and made threes by Oberlin started the backwards slide for the visiting Hawks. Oberlin took a 36-28 lead into intermission after shooting fifty percent from behind the arc, earning 18 points from long distance compared to Hilbert’s six points.
With 9:50 left to go in the second half, the Yeomen stretched the lead to 14 points (56-42). The sharp-shooting hosts only attempted 19 shots in the 20-minute half, but they made ten shots (four counting as three pointers). Hilbert’s Chris Hoak turned the heat up shooting 3 for 5 (2-2 behind the arc in the last three minutes) but Merritt went six for eight at the foul line in the final minute to capture the win.
Up next for Hilbert is a home contest against Alfred University November 26 with a 2pm tip. Alfred enters the contest with a 2-1 overall record.
