HAMBURG, NY – Sam Gioia (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) scored 24 points as the Hilbert College men’s basketball team rebounded from a defeat Friday night, and beat La Roche College, 81-71, on Saturday afternoon.  The previous night, Lake Erie College dominated the second half, and beat the Hawks, 88-64.  This weekend’s action takes the Hawks to 7-11 on the season, and 5-6 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC).

On Friday, Lake Erie College got off to a tremendous start, scoring the first eight points of the game.  Al Leight (Oakfield, NY/Oakfield-Alabama) scored 12 points off the bench in the first half to keep the game close, as the Storm went into the locker room with a 38-26 lead.

In the second half, Lake Erie’s backcourt took over, as LEC’s Reggie Richardson and Howard Washington went a combined 10-for-10 from the field, including 6-for-6 from behind the arc, combining for 31 points to put the game away.  The Storm shot a blistering 72% from the field in the second half, and did not miss in seven three-point attempts.

For Hilbert, Leight led the team in scoring with 14 points.  Gioia added 13 points and freshman Dallas Reinard (Smethport, PA/Smethport) added 11.  Richardson scored a game-high 22 points, all in the second half, for Lake Erie.

Saturday afternoon saw the Hawks start the game against La Roche College on a 13-1 run, capped by an offensive putback by Leight.  The Hawks continued their strong play throughout the first half, and Glen Ufland’s (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon) third first-half three-pointer pushed the lead to 50-20 as the first half concluded.

The second half was a completely different story, as the Redhawks turned up the defensive pressure and limited Hilbert to 34.5% shooting from the field.  A three-pointer by La Roche’s Carlo Dorazio cut the Hilbert lead to nine with :48 seconds remaining, but that was as close as it would get, as Hilbert held on for the victory.

Gioia led all scorers with 24 points, and added 7 assists.  Senior Sean Kenney (Tonawanda, NY/Tonawanda) contributed 18 points and eight rebounds for the victors.  Demetrius Pringle and Nate Davis led La Roche with 14 points each.

The Hawks next face the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, in a critical AMCC matchup, on Tuesday, February 1.  The game is scheduled for an 8:00 PM start.
