PITTSBURGH, PA – Three players scored in double digits for Hilbert, but La Roche College’s bench scoring and offensive rebounding secured the RedHawks 72-55 victory in men’s basketball December 3. Even though Hilbert’s Dan McFarland and Chris Parrot shared game-high scoring honors (14 points apiece), it was La Roche’s David Jackson’s efforts that stole the show, pushing his team’s overall record to 5-1 and 2-0 in AMCC league standings. Hilbert drops to 0-1 in league and 2-5 overall.
In a back and forth affair, Hilbert and La Roche traded baskets for the game’s first 17 minutes before La Roche went on a 7-0 run to take a 34-26 jump into half time. By intermission, La Roche already traveled to the foul line for 19 attempts (4 for Hilbert) and grabbed 10 offensive rebounds (0 for Hilbert). CJ Hodge led the Hawks with eight points with Parrott netting seven. Eleven minutes into the second half, La Roche started a 12-0 run which extended their lead to 21 points before Trevor Stark’s layup cut into the spread with 3:02 remaining. Hodge finished the contest with 11 points and 8 assists/2 steals.
Jackson capped the day pulling down 18 rebounds – 10 on the offensive glass – and scored 12 points with two blocks. Ryan Frantz came off the bench and produced a 12 point game-high effort.
Hilbert scored 20 fast break points but were disadvantaged 26-7 in bench scoring and 19-4 in second chance points. The Hawks had more steals (11-4) and fewer turnovers (15-18) then La Roche but their second-half shooting percentage dipped to 34% while the home team improved to 48.5%.
Hilbert next travels to Penn State Behrend for a 6pm tip December 7 in Erie, PA. The Lions stand at an uncharacteristic 1-5 overall record and are one slot ahead of the Hawks in league standings with their 1-1 conference record.
