The Hilbert men’s cross country team finished another season with a core group of committed runners blended with a cluster of new faces. Associate head coaches Sue Devlin and Jerry Mangan provided direction, but it was the veterans who pulled it all together making the team complete. The Hawks trained Monday through Friday with the expectation of shown timed improvement at each Saturday’s invitational race. The 2010 season became official at the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championship meet (Schenley Park, PA) where the Hawks finished in ninth place.
Returning for his second season, Aaron Lawrence (Fishkill, NY/John Jay &Erie Community College) was the team’s top runner as he completed his final year at Hilbert. At the league’s championship meet at the end of October, Lawrence was the first Hawk to cross the finish line in his typical fashion. Junior Paul Coleman (Buffalo, NY/Cardinal O’Hara) and sophomore Jeff Gauthier (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon-St. Jude) returned for another year of competition and their positive attitudes were great examples for the new comers to the program. Sophomores Stephen Crane (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) and Cameron Haag (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Wheatfield) were dedicated harriers whose times improved all season long. Crane was honored with the Meghan Memorial Award given to the runner who exemplified the same spirit and love for running as the former Hawk’s runner did. Duel sport athlete, Jimmy Campbell (Owego, NY/Owego Free Academy) was a nice addition to the team and his running talents were appreciated. Campbell, a forward on the Hawks men’s soccer team, returned to athletic competition after a year of rehabilitation from an ACL tear suffered very early in his freshman year. Campbell was the first Hawk at the Megan Memorial Race (5K) and was the second Hilbert runner to complete the 8K AMCC race.
Rounding out the roster sports were freshmen Lenny Messina (Long Island, NY/Centereach), Keon McCarley (Buffalo, NY/Oracle) and Hakeem McCarty (West Valley, NY/West Valley).
The Hawks continue to train year round with the expectation of establishing a solid cross-country program at Hilbert College. To see the complete 2010 season results, click <here>.
