2010 Season Review: The men’s golf team, under new leadership, completed their 2010 season with a new identity. Kevin Rice, as a first year coach, took a group of new comers to Hilbert College and molded them into a dedicated group of athletes. The Hawks competed in five matches in September then hosted their first annual Hilbert Invitational early October before they swung down to the AMCC championship match the second weekend in October to end the season.
Junior John Nowak (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) was Hilbert’s top golfer this season. Nowak's best finish was 5th place at the Medaille Invitational and more importantly 25th at the AMCC championships. Hilbert’s other golfers were juniors Patrick Brooks (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) and Jim Pernick (Tonawanda, NY/St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute) as well as freshmen Michael Werner (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park), Jim Pernick (Tonawanda, NY/St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute), Dave Grigsby (West Valley, NY/West Valley) and Kristopher Hulley (Angola, NY/Springville Griffiths Institute).
As a team, Hilbert had the highest finish placing 4th in the Hilbert Invitational, posting a score of 395 at the Gowanda Country Club (par 72). The team’s lowest score of 380 was earned at the Medaille Invitational par 72 course (Glen Oaks Country Club). In the final match of the season (AMCC Championships at the Oak Tree Country Club - West Middlesex, PA) the Hawks took 9th place wtih a 785 overall score on the par 71 course for the two-day tournament.
Coach Rice will take the experiences from this season, add a few more strong golfers to the mix and develop the team into a competitive group in the 2011 season. Read the season recap notes <here>.
