Strong Second Half Not Enough for Lacrosse

Myrtle Beach, SC – After scoring the game’s first goal, the Hilbert College lacrosse team got themselves into first-half penalty trouble allowing SUNY Cobleskill to build a nice cushion (10-3) by half time. The Fighting Tigers (2-1) held their lead the rest of the game and earned a 14-9 victory over the first-year Hawks program. Ryan Wagner (Orchard Park, NY/Canisius) led Hilbert’s (2-1) offense with five goals, giving him 12 scores in the team’s first three contests.

Cobleskill built a 7-2 lead after the first quarter, and, by winning the face-off and ground ball battles, they continued to control the game in the second quarter. Hilbert’s goalie, Pat Lunderman (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Wheatfield) turned back numerous point-blank shots (16 saves) in the first half, keeping the Hawk’s hopes alive for a strong second-half comeback.

Hilbert made adjustments during intermission then took the field with purpose. Nick Kieffer (Lee Center, NY/Rome Free Academy) made minor corrections to his face-off circle routine (winning 4 of 6) which helped Hilbert gain extra possessions / scoring opportunities. Josh Baker (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) racked up two goals (two assists) to pair with Wagner’s two back-to-back quick hitters in the second half. In the end, Hilbert’s first half penalties and the Tigers strong play proved to be too much for the young Hawks team to overcome.

Both teams will go at it again on March 16 with another 2pm game in Myrtle Beach in the Snowbird Lacrosse spring break tournament.
