The Hilbert Men’s soccer team suffered two losses this weekend as they participated in the Alfred University Invitational. The losses drop the Hawks record to 0-3 on the season.
On Saturday September 5, in the opening round of the Alfred Invitational, Alfred University defeated Hilbert College at Merrill Field by a score of 2-0. Finding the back of the net twice for Alfred was freshman forward Frankie Mannino. Alfred outshot the Hawks 18-5. Junior goalkeeper Eric Davies (Tonawanda, NY/Tonawanda) made the start for the Hawks recording six saves. Sophomore goalkeeper Scott Walker (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) took over the second half duties recording one save on the day. Ed Minkel (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) recorded the only shot on goal for the Hawks.
On day two of the tournament the Hawks took on Cazenovia College. Goalkeepers Eric Davies (Tonawanda, NY/Tonawanda) and Scott Walker (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) split time between the pipes again in the 2-0 loss. Davies recorded five saves while Walker recorded four saves. Matt Gillis (Cazenovia College) scored both goals on the Hawks with the game winner coming just 4:55 into the contest. Gillis finished the tournament with five goals. Cazenovia outshot the Hawks on day two of the tournament 20-7.
“Giving up an early goal in each of the two matches was a very difficult hole to dig out from,” Coach Kronenwetter said. “We will regroup and refocus for our next road game vs. Morrisville on Wednesday this week.”
At the conclusion of the tournament, Cazenovia and Alfred went on to share the title of the Alfred University Invitational. Each team finished with a perfect 2-0 record in the two day tournament since they both defeated Thiel College and Hilbert College.
Despite the losses, freshman forward James Knapp (Lockport, NY /St. Mary’s) and junior defenseman Greg Lake (West Seneca, NY/ West Seneca) earned a spot on the All-Tournament team.
The Hawks return to action at home on September 12th as they host Grove City College at 3 p.m.
