Pernick Earns Third Homer of Season

Greensburg, PA-- The Hilbert baseball team finished out their regular season schedule at Pitt-Greensburg on Thursday afternoon. The Hawks dropped both games losing 19-7 in game one and falling just short in game two, 9-7. Jim Pernick (Tonawanda, NY/ St. Joe’s Collegiate Inst.) earned his third home run of the season in the second loss between the conference opponents, while Matt Militello (Depew, NY/ Lancaster) went a combined 7-for-8 on the day with two doubles in game one.

In game two, Hilbert put one up on the scoreboard first as Dave Cunningham’s (Cheektowaga, NY/ Maryvale) single to center field would score Militello for an early 1-0 Hawk lead. Pitt- Greensburg answered back with five runs of their own in the first inning of play, giving them a 5-1 advantage.
 
Hilbert used three one-run innings to chip away at the deficit.  Pernick’s solo home run over the right field fence in the fifth inning provided one of the one-run innings for the Hawks which cut the Bobcat lead to 6-3.
 
In the bottom of the seventh the Hawks began to battle back. Pernick once again connected on a pitch which was good enough for a single. Cunningham would earn his sixth double of the season and send home Frank Simmeth (Cheektowaga, NY/ St. Mary’s).  Matt Begeal (Northville, NY/ Wells) would earn an RBI along with Jake Simonick (Blasdell, NY/ Orchard Park) as two more runs would cross home plate.
 
The late comeback surge would not be enough as only three runs would score in the seventh inning. Greensburg would take the second game, 9-7 for a Greensburg sweep.
 
Militello went a perfect 4-for-4 in game one with two doubles, an RBI, and score two runs. Greensburg accumulated 19 runs in the victory.
 
The Hawks finish the season 5-28 overall and 2-18 in the AMCC.
