WELLS, NY – With a huge 3rd quarter offensive effort, Hilbert College ran away with a 18-9 victory over Wells College in men’s lacrosse April 12. Ryan Wagner (Orchard Park, NY/Canisius) led with 6 goals (2 assists) to put the Hawks back in the win column (5-4 overall); John Mulcahey’s 4 goals were best for the Express (3-5). Hilbert controlled the game – outshooting Wells 56-31 (20-4 advantage in the key 3rd quarter). Pat Lunderman (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Wheatfield) finished with 11 saves for the Hawks.

Wells College grabbed the lead one minute into the game only to find themselves playing catch-up the rest of the way. Three different Hawks earned a goal each before Wells responded for their second point with just less than 10 minutes left in the first session. Nick Kieffer (Lee Center, NY/Rome Free Academy) put Hilbert back on track with 2 goals to end the 1st quarter giving the Hawks a 5-2 lead. Wells picked up more ground balls and almost matched the shots on goal in the second quarter as they outscored the Hawks by one, but were still down 8-6 at half time.
After a brief half-time discussion with the coaches, the Hawks dominated the 3rd quarter scoring 8 goals to shut the door on any Wells comeback. In the 15-minute period, five different men scored with Wagner getting 4 goals. The hosts opened the last quarter scoring 3 goals, but John Jewett (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) and Wagner finished the scoring for the day securing the 18-9 final.   Other key offensive players were Kori Halftown (Gowanda, NY/Gowanda) who contributed 4 goals with 2 assists plus Kieffer and Jewett each netting 2 goals.
Hilbert will host their home-opener against Morrisville State Thursday, April 14 with a 4pm start.
