ALFRED, NY – After jumping out in front and holding onto the lead for the first seven minutes of the game, Hilbert went cold from the floor and surrendered 20 points to Alfred University over the next eight minutes en route to a 74-48 women’s basketball non-conference loss November 24. Jenah Labuski finished with 13 points as the only Hawk to break into double figure scoring. Alfred’s Rachael Stedman chipped in 15 points off the bench to lead the Saxons who improved to 2-2 overall.
All five Hawk starters put points on the boards to start the game. Senior Amber Grosch netted the first Hawk points, followed by a Sarah Lorusso jumper. Sophomore Jessica Jamison followed up her offensive rebound with a put-back score to give Hilbert their largest lead (6-2) at 17:24. Alfred’s Sarah Federicco netted her second layup in the paint cutting into Hilbert’s hold, but Natalie Whitman hit both her foul shots stretching the lead back to three. The hosts ran their offensive pattern and built a three-point lead before Labuski hit her first 3-pointer of the game knotting the game for the last time (12-12) at 9:12. Alfred went on a 20-5 run scoring on eight of their next nine possessions putting the game out of reach for Hilbert by 4:36. The twenty-point half time deficit (41-21) grew to 30 points by 11:20 before the final horn sounded.
Hilbert had nine players contribute in the scoring column and they outrebounded Alfred by three (55-52). Both squads were credited with 19 offensive boards, but Hilbert only converted 15 made baskets for the contest (28.3%). Hilbert went to the foul line more than Alfred but shot only 43.8% (15-35) giving up freebies which could have cut into the Saxon lead.
Alfred’s Harley Cleary (11 points ) and Heather Hebert (10 points) carried the Saxons offensively. Frederico pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds while Hebert was credited with eight steals.
Hilbert (2-2) will board a bus and travel to Keuka College with the men’s team for another non-conference 6pm double-header November 26.
