ERIE, PA – Adam Weaver and Ryan Ratajczak maintained their individual national rankings, but the Hilbert College men’s volleyball team battled to a 3-0 United Volleyball Conference league loss at Penn State Behrend March 21. The Lions improved to 4-7 while pushing the Hawks to 2-9 in conference play.
Weaver, ranked #2 in kills per set, recorded 13 kills and added six digs and two blocks while Ratajczak (#5 in digs per set) was credited with 11 digs.
Nathan Steele led the hosts with 11 kills to help the Lions (11-11) set a new program record for the most wins in a season during their second year of Division III status.
The Hawks challenged Behrend in the opening set, before dropping 25-19. The couldn’t get going in the second set and found themselves down by ten points before they fell 25-14.
Like the first set, Hilbert grabbed the first point in the third set, but unlike the two previous games, the Hawks controlled the game’s pace. Each team traded points the entire way with Hilbert holding the lead until a 14-14 tie. The Lions stretched their score by 3 points before Hilbert fought back and took a 23-21 advantage late. Back-to-back Behrend kills combined with a Hilbert hitting and service reception error gave the Erie, PA school a 25-23 come-from-behind victory.
The Hawks travel to Keuka College (3/27) and Wells College (3/30) before they close out their season at home against Behrend (4/3) and Thiel College (4/9).
