AURORA, NY – The Hilbert College women’s basketball team opened their 2011-2012 season on the road with a 67-51 loss to Wells College November 15. The Express started the game off on a quick 7-0 run, however Hilbert climbed back within one (9-8) at the 13:16 mark of the first half. That would be as close as the Hawks would get as the Express kept building a healthy lead for the remainder of the game.
Three Hawks finished in double digits, with freshman Jenah Labuski leading the way with 11 points and nine boards. Freshmen Tiana Cheasman had 10 points and Sarah Lorusso passed for three assists and four steals (8 points) and junior Amber Grosch chipped in 10 points. Even though Hilbert was down 14 points at the half, they kept fighting the remainder of the game. Poor shooting from behind the arc and from the free-throw line ultimately hurt the Hawks.
Wells had a balanced scoring performance, with Kristen Ryan leading all scorers with 21 points. Also contributing for the Express were Ashley Roser and Jessilyn Artaho-Aki, each recronding 16 points.
Hilbert will be back in action this weekend then they travel across town to Buffalo State for the Betty Abgott Tournament. Hilbert will match up against Buffalo State on Friday, November 18 at 7pm. Alfred University will face Hamilton College as the prelim at 5pm. The tournament’s consolation and championship games are scheduled to be played on November 19 at 12pm and 2pm, respectively. Hilbert will suit up for their first home contest, and double-header with the men, on November 26 at 4pm.
