ALFRED, NY – The 2013 season opener did not finish the way the Hilbert College men’s lacrosse team had hoped, as the Hawks suffered a 15-4 non-conference defeat to Alfred University March 6.
Junior Sean Purtill scored 2 goals to led Hilbert’s road efforts while Alfred’s Derek Green netted 4 goals helping the Saxons to improve to 3-0 early in the year.
Alfred snuck the ball past Hilbert’s William Wagner early in the first quarter. It took almost eight minutes for Alfred to strike again, but sophmore Brendan Kane put the Hawks on the score board at 1:44 in the first session. Purtill found the back of the net 48-seconds into the second period before the Saxons exploded for six un-answered scores. Hilbert’s Shaughn Irving earned his first collegiate goal just before half time, pitting Alfred with a 9-3 lead at the break.
The Saxons continued their scoring barrage hitting six more times before Purtill netted his second for the day at 7:12. Both teams played even the rest of the game.
Wagner earned 13 saves in net for Hilbert before Rob Eisenbart relieved him in the fourth quarter. The Hawks were credited with 27 shots and 20 ground balls, while winning 9 face-offs. Alfred controlled the game with 63 shots, 37 ground balls and won 10 face-offs.
Hilbert (0-1) travels to Myrtle Beach, SC March 8. The Hawks are scheduled to play the Catholic University (3/9) and Emmanuel College (3/13) during the Snowbird Spring tournament.
