The 2009 women’s volleyball team opened their season up on Friday, September 4th when they competed at the Spartan Invitational Tournament hosted by D’Youville College. The Hawk’s first opponent was Keuka College. The young team started out strong in the first two games, but couldn’t sustain the intensity and lost the 4-set match (23-25, 25-23, 18-25, 16-25). Junior Carole Jones (Gainesville, NY/Letchworth) lead Hilbert with 7 kills while freshman Rachel Kwiakowski (West Seneca, NY/Orchard Park) had 20 assists and 4 kills.

Hilbert’s second game was against cross-town rival Medaille College. The Mavericks came out ready to play and made Hilbert work for their points. Carole Jones had 4 blocks and 3 aces while sisters Dale Jonathan (11 digs) and Devon Jonathan (6 kills) (Basom, NY/Akron) lead the statistical categories for the 3-set loss (18-25, 20-25, 15-25).
Coach Amanda Logue really felt the players came out strong on Friday afternoon, “but this being our first competition outside of practice the players realized they struggle to keep their heads up and maintain their confidence. Their nerves got the best of them by the end of the night against Medaille.”
Day two of the tourney began with a 10 am game against the host team D’Youville. The difference in this game which impacted the outcome were the number of errors made by Hilbert. D’Youville swept the Hawks in 3-sets (25-13, 25-20, 28-26). Dale Jonathan led the team again in digs with 13 for the match and 4 different players each had 5 kills for Hilbert: freshman Brittany Baum (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown) junior Erica Page (Angola, NY/ Lake Shore), freshman Devon Jonathan and Carole Jones.
In final game of the day, the Hawks played Morrisville to another 4-set game with 13 kills from Carole Jones, 25 assists from Rachel Kwiakowski and 24 digs from All-Tournament selection Erica Page. Set scores were 22-25, 25-15, 15-25, 16-25 in favor of Morrisville.
Medaille College ended up winning the tournament with a 4-0 record against all opponents.  D'Youville College came in second with record of 3-1 and Keuka College finished 1-3.  First year head coach Amanda Logue is not discouraged by her team’s performance this weekend. “We learned a lot about our strengths and weaknesses and we are excited to get back in the gym to focus on the areas that need improvement.”
