HAMBURG, NY – The Athletics Department proudly honored their 2011-2012 student-athletes at its annual Athletics Awards Reception May 3. Following the Swan Auditorium ceremony, a casual light-fare snacks reception was held in the West Herr Atrium.
The evening consisted of a series of presentations which profiled Hilbert student-athlete academic achievements, and senior athlete awards followed by the distribution of individual awards announced by each head coach from the twelve NCAA Division III teams. President Cynthia Zane’s welcoming remarks opened the evening celebration. Hilbert’s athletic director, Susan Viscomi, guided the program, serving as the night’s emcee.
Eleven of the twelve NCAA Division III teams are members of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference. The AMCC honors student-athletes who maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher by the completion of the fall semester, each year. The 2012 AMCC Academic All-Conference team consisted of 56 Hilbert athletes, many of whom sat for a ‘team picture’ at the conclusion of the evening. The men’s lacrosse team is an associate member of the North Eastern Athletic Conference which announces their yearly Academic All-Conference team at the conclusion of a full academic year. Those athletes must achieve a 3.4 cumulative grade point average to be honored by the NEAC. But, Hilbert would like to announce these lacrosse players who achieved the same 3.2 gpa as their fellow athletes: Tyler Catalfano, Michael Cavanagh, Roland Jimerson, Richard Landahl, John Pingitore, Doug Tatac and Nick Tuttle.
And lastly a special acknowledgement goes out to the following student-athletes who earned a perfect 4.0 in the fall semester - Nicole Estep, Amber Grosch, Allison Hall, Maria Linares, Joe Pernick and Matt Williams.
Special recognition for Hilbert’s 2012 edition of the Chi Alpha Sigma New York Theta Chapter followed. The National College Athlete Honor Society honors junior and senior student-athletes carrying a grade point average of 3.4 or higher who exhibit good moral character. The fourteen newest members were awarded a certificate and a medal of honor: Nicole Blair, junior; Michael Cavanagh, junior; Stephen Crane, senior; Maria DelMonico, junior; Amber Grosch, junior; Allison Hall, senior; James Knapp, junior; Rachel Kwiatkowski, junior; Jessica Morey, junior; Katie Newton, junior; Kayla Norman, senior; Katherine Pettis, junior; Emili Ripley, senior; and Stephanie Smith, junior. These student-athletes joined three senior repeat honorees (Michael Maritato, Jill Martucci and Matt Militello).
Head coaches of each program took a few moments to recap their team’s season and to announce each squad’s 2011-2012 award recipients. To see a complete list of Most Valuable, Most Improved and Coaches Award winners (click here).
Once the bulk of the evening presentations were distributed, Jill Martucci (women’s softball and soccer; Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) and Matthew Militello (baseball; Depew, NY/Lancaster) were announced as the 2012 McGrath Award winners. The award is provided by Francis and Marie McGrath, two generous benefactors of Hilbert College who stipulate that an award be given to the one female and male graduating student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average (over the course of at least five academic semesters). Martucci will graduate with a degree in computer security and information assurance, boasting a 3.91 cumulative GPA. Militello will graduate with a criminal justice degree earning a cumulative 3.48 grade point average.
