FINDLEY LAKE, NY- The Hilbert College golf team continued their latest trend of dropping strokes in tournament play when they competed in the Penn State Behrend Invitational September 20. The Hawks finished in 11th place (333 team score) finding themselves only 1 stroke behind the tenth placed team and only 7 strokes behind the ninth placed team. Hilbert’s Jake Reinecke (in photo to right) went low for the Hawks shooting a +5 77 on the lower course at Peek n’ Peak. Reinecke’s 77 put him in a tie for 16th and only 5 strokes off Penn State Behrend’s Zack Polanski who medaled with an even Par 72.
Penn State Behrend owned the top five slots having golfers place 1st, T2, & 4. Behrend’s Dante Vetica finished 2nd after beating his cousin Jared Vetica of La Roche College in a match of cards. Dante won because he birdied and Jared pared the fifth hole which represents the #1 handicap (most difficult) hole on the course.
The Hawks had a strong team performance today. Ryan Ratajczak and Gary Gawera both posted solid rounds of 80 and 85. Karl Blomback shot a respectable 91 while Ryan Tofil beat out a couple of golfers to help lower his team’s score in the overall tally.
The Hawks will look to keep improving and dropping strokes in their next match Saturday September 22nd at the Glen Oak Golf Club hosted by Medaille College.
