Career Checklist

Freshman Career Checklist

  • Meet with a career counselor to discuss past accomplishments, skills and abilities, career-related hobbies, career values, and options.
  • Take the Strong-Campbell, a career inventory, or the Career Assessment Inventory available at the Career Development Center on the first floor of Franciscan Hall.
  • Read the Occupational Outlook Handbook in your major area(s) of interest.
  • Talk with professors and upperclassmen students about different majors and careers.
  • Attend seminars offered by the CDC.
  • Visit one employer in your major using the Career Connections Mentoring Program offered by the CDC.

 

Sophomore Career Checklist

  • Visit an employer in your major.
  • Continue to read about careers in the Career Resource Lab on the first floor of Franciscan Hall.
  • Look into the prospect of doing an internship or practicum during the summer.
  • Research opportunities for part-time and summer jobs. Develop resume and cover letters for your job search.
  • Practice interviewing questions or participate in a mock interview.
  • Sign up to participate in the Career Connections Mentoring Program offered by the Career Development Center.

 

Junior Career Checklist

  • Meet with a career counselor to identify your values, interests and goals related to post-graduate options.
  • Obtain experience in your field of interest.
  • Obtain catalogs and applications if considering graduate school.
  • Attend a graduate school workshop offered by the Career Development Center. Go to our section for the latest workshop schedule.
  • Attend seminars and visit with on-campus college and/or employment recruiters at job fairs.
  • Work on resume, cover letter and interviewing skills if considering employment in the near future.
  • Start a credential file with the CDC.

 

Senior Career Checklist

  • Analyze and summarize all your experiences in the past four years to assess your career-related strengths and skills.
  • Update your resume and write persuasive cover letters for permanent employment or for summer employment.
  • Network with professors, on-campus recruiters, family and/or friends to develop job contacts.
  • Attend Hilbert's fall Career and Job Information Fair and spring Professional Success Program and Job Fair to make employer connections. Click here for a schedule of these events.
  • Check job listings after setting up a credential file and secure references.
  • Interview for jobs.
