HAMBURG, NY – Medaille College (12-6, 10-1) retains the top spot in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference after their 72-60 victory over Hilbert College in women’s basketball January 23. The Mavericks’ Brittney Rowland garnered game high scoring honors making 12 of 19 shots from the floor to finish with 33 points. Hilbert’s Natalie Whitman led a balance Hawk scoring effort hitting 14 points and grabbing 11 rebounds to earn her sixth double-double of the year.
Four Hawks sank buckets early in the contest to give Hilbert an early six-point lead after six minutes of play. Medaille took their first lead at 12:57 and built a 27-19 advantage five minutes later. Sarah Lorusso’s 3-point shot capped a 7-0 run before the Mavericks took the 39-31 half time lead.
Hilbert had their best shooting performance of the year. The Hawks hit 12 of the 21 attempts and made 3 of 4 shots from behind the arc netting 57% of their shots. Medaille finished the half making 7 long distance shots and pulled down 17 offensive rebounds.
Jenah Labuski opened the second half with two short jumpers and Whitman placed the ball in the hoop cutting the deficit to (39-37), but Medaille responded with an 8-0 run fueled by Rowland’s four points. By 17:05, the visitors held a double digit lead which they carried to the final horn.
Whitman made five of her eight shots from the floor and all four free throw attempts in addition to her game-high four blocks. Labuski pulled down 9 rebounds while adding 11 points and Lorusso dished for six assists while chipping in 10 points and two blocks.
Hilbert finished the game shooting season-best 40.7% from the floor and went 10 of 12 from the foul line. Medaille held a 49-34 rebounding advantage which was the only stat line they beat the Hawks in, besides the final score.
