1. How do I apply for a room and meal plan?
Go to our Applying for Housing section to find out how to sign up for a room. You may also pick up a housing application at the Office of Student Life located on the first floor of Franciscan Hall, or indicate your housing interest on your Hilbert admissions application.
2. Are the apartments and residence hall co-ed?
Yes, the apartments and residence hall accommodate both female and male students. Individual Residence Hall suites, which consist of two bedrooms with a private bathroom, and apartments, which consist of four or five bedrooms and two bathrooms, are assigned by gender. That is, all residents assigned to a suite or apartment will be of the same gender.
3. When can I move in?
You will receive in the mail check-in dates and times in mid-July. We can make arrangements for students to arrive before the official opening. To learn more, contact the Office of Residence Life at 649-7900, ext. 362, or e-mail us. Generally, students move into the residence hall the weekend before classes begin.
4. How are roommates assigned?
Mutual requests for specific individuals are honored when possible. Otherwise, roommates are assigned on the basis of information supplied on the residence hall contract. No room assignments are made on the basis of race, color or national origin.
6. When will I know my room assignment?
Room assignments are usually mailed in mid-July. Along with your assignment, you will receive the name, address and home phone number of your roommate and information on check-in procedures. Students moving into the residence hall in the spring semester will learn their room assignment in early-January.
7. What if there is a roommate problem?
Students should first contact their resident assistant (RA) who will attempt to mediate and resolve problems. If there is still a problem, alternatives can be discussed with the residence life director.
8. Can I have my own room?
A limited number of single rooms are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Indication of a request for a single room on the residence hall contract does not guarantee the request will be granted. Students who are granted a single room will be sent confirmation by the Office of Residence Life. All others will be assigned a double room and placed on a single room waiting list. First-year students may inquire as to the availability of apartment living.
12. What are some of the things I should bring?
To start, we suggest you bring items that will make you feel at home in your new room. A complete list of things we suggest you bring is available online.
13. What is not allowed?
Items like toaster ovens, hot plates, candles, and microwaves are not allowed in residence rooms. For a more thorough list, check out What to Leave at Home.
20. Is phone and cable service provided?
Phone jacks are provided in each room. It is the student's responsibility to contact the phone company to request service by calling 1-800-698-3545 or 890-7100. All transactions are handled directly between the student and phone company. Basic cable service is also available at no charge in each room.
21. What if I need to arrive before residence halls open?

22. Where do packages need to be sent for moving into the residence hall?
All packages sent to Hilbert College should be sent to the resident's room number. Packages must have the student's name and room number and the college's street address (5200 South Park Ave., Hamburg, NY 14075). Perishable deliveries, like flowers, should be delivered to the front desk of the residence hall and the resident will be notified immediately.
23. Can I bring a car?
Any student may have a car on campus. Cars must be registered with the Office of Campus Safety. You will receive a parking permit which must be displayed on your car's rearview mirror.
25. Can students leave belongings in their rooms between semesters or during breaks?
Yes, students returning to the same room after the break may leave their belongings. Even though the residence hall is locked and secure during breaks, students are encouraged to take valuable items home. Electrical items must be unplugged, wastebaskets emptied, refrigerators defrosted and emptied, and windows must be closed and locked. Apartments remain open during the breaks.
26. Does Hilbert provide summer storage for returning students?
Hilbert does not have space for students to store their belongings during the year or summer. Belongings cannot be left in the residence hall or apartments during the summer before the start of the fall semester.
27. Who cleans the residence hall rooms?
Students are responsible for cleaning their own rooms. College maintenance staff clean the common areas, such as the hallways and lounges. Vacuum equipment is available for student use.
28. What if there is something wrong with my room?
If you have a request for maintenance or repair work, submit a maintenance order form to the residence hall office located in the residence hall foyer. You may obtain the form from your community assistant or a desk attendant.
29. How do I become a resident assistant (RA)?
Resident assistants (RAs) are hired through the Office of Residence Life early in the spring semester. For more information, talk to any current RA or the director of residence life, or visit the want to be an RA? page.
30. Who oversees the day-to-day operations of the residence hall and apartments?
The hall director, who is a graduate assistant in the Office of Student Life, supervises the residence hall and apartments. The residence life director oversees the hall director and resident assistants (RAs) who interact with students daily.
31. What if a problem arises?
A resident assistant (RA) is available on each residence hall floor and in each apartment building to assist residents with a variety of concerns. They can also refer residents to appropriate campus offices for help, like the Counseling Center, or other community resources if needed.
32. What if a student gets sick?
The Health and Wellness Center is open 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Monday-Friday. During off-hours, resident assistants (RAs) are on-site and can readily respond in person should a student emergency arise. Emergency medical services are available within minutes of campus. Campus safety personnel are also trained and certified in CPR and first aid.
33. Are my belongings safe in my room?
Nothing is completely secure. However, to enhance security, you are encouraged to lock your room and carry your room key with you at all times. Exterior doors are locked 24 hours a day.
