HAMBURG, NY – The Hilbert College baseball team dropped two Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference games (10-1, and 10-0) to Penn State Behrend in baseball March 28. The Lions took commanding wins to improve to 2-0 in league play while dropping the Hawks to 1-3.
Hilbert found themselves down 2-0 through three innings before Behrend inched away from the hosts beginning in the fourth. Matt Bittner hit a two run, home run in the fifth which gave the Lions momentum while it took the wind out of the Hawks’ sails. With Behrend scoring two runs in both the sixth and seventh inning and freezing the Hawks bats, they easily won the first game 10-1.
John Babocsi went 2 for 3 and Frank Mancuso earned the lone RBI late in the game when he knocked in pinch-runner Aaron Lawrence for the solo Hawk score. Garrett Pauley took his third loss giving up ten hits with five strike-outs in 4.1 innings.
Hilbert earned six hits in the second bill, but still could not keep the Lions off the bags. Six different Hilbert players earned a hit, with none of them at bat more than three times during the seven innings. The fourth inning looked promising for the Hawks when Ryan Ilardi and Chris Hoak hit back-to-back doubles but a throw to the plate tagged out a potential first run which cooled the rally. Pat Lagueras earned a double the following inning, but was left stranded on second at the close of the inning. Behrend’s pitching trio earned six strikeouts, with Chad Zurat getting credit for three in his one inning pitched.
Nick Sherman (2-2) opened for the Hawks and went four innings. He struck out two and gave up eight hits. Behrend earned eleven hits with nine RBIs and only tallied three strike outs for the game.
Hilbert (4-10) travels to Penn State Altoona March 31 for their third AMCC contest.
