9-2 box
FREDONIA, NY – Fredonia State’s Steve Sturm scattered six hits as Hilbert College endured a 9-2 non-conference loss in baseball April 1st. Jim Pernick went 2 for 3 with one double and one RBI as the Hawks played through wet weather to drop to 4-13 overall with the first game in April in the books.
The Blue Devils offense was as steady as the rain. Fredonia scored in five of the six innings they batted. Seven players had at least one hit and six players were credited with a stolen base with Dillion Lowe sprinting for three bags himself.
John Babocsi carried the load of the game, facing 20 batters the first five innings before Frank Casey relieved him in the sixth.
Pernick hit his double in the sixth inning which scored the Hawks’ first run with Pat Lagueras crossing the plate to make it 7-1 at the middle. The Blue Devils earned two more runs off Casey before the top of the 7th.
Joe Hart reached base on a short stop error and moved around to third when Tim Staub ground out to the short. Sean McGrath’s single drove Hart home for the Hawks second run of the afternoon. With the Hawks final out, the game ended with the host claiming a wet 9-2 victory.
The second game of the double header was called due to field conditions.
Hilbert’s next game is set for April 3 when they host Cazenovia College (6-8) in a 2 pm first pitch double header.
