HAMBURG, NY – Hilbert College’s five-run rally in the bottom of the 7th inning sent the non-league baseball game to extra innings against D’Youville College April 13. The Spartans Bob Mohring and Josh Pfuntner each earned an RBI in the 9th inning to give the visitors their cushion heading into the bottom of the inning. The Hawks were denied a third rally in the game, and after three and a half hours of play, D’Youville took a 14-12 win.
D’Youville held a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth before the Hawks went on a five-run tear to take the lead. That 5-4 advantage was wiped out at the top of the fourth when the Spartans rallied with a five-run explosion of their own.
Hilbert score two runs in the sixth, gave up three runs at the top of the seventh and found themselves down 12 – 7 with their last at bats.
The Hawks second five-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning brought new energy to the team and fans in the stands. Earning RBIs for Hilbert were Pat Lagueras (double), Joe Pernick (2 RBI) and Matt Militello.
With the score tied, both teams adjusted their line-ups and played on into extra innings.
D’Youville stranded two runners on base in the 8th without a score. Hilbert earned three hits and all three were stuck on base as the Hawks finished with two strikeouts and a fly out.
The red and white scored two quick runs in the 9th and held Hilbert score-less to improve to 4-17 overall.
Hilbert finished with 15 hits on the day with 12 RBI. D’Youville earned 12 hits and 13 RBI along with a three-run home run in the top of the 7th.
Joe Pernick went two for five (3RBI) while Lagueras was two for three (2RBI) and Chris Hoak and John Babocsi each finished with two hits apiece.
The second game of the non-conference double header was cancelled since the first game went so long.
The Hawks (7-17) have a few days of rest before they play cross-town and AMCC rival Medaille College April 17.
