HAMBURG, NY – Hilbert College bounced back to capture the second game of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference double header against Medaille April 17. The Hawks reversed the results with their 11-5 victory after dropping a 13-3 opening game. Jim Pernick (in photo to right) went 4 for 5 and finished with three RBIs and scored two runs. Chris Hoak was 5 for 8 and scored four runs to help Hilbert improve to 8-18 overall and jump to 4-8 in AMCC standings, while they dropped the Mavericks to 3-11 and 5-22 overall.
Hilbert took control right away in the second game scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning. They extended their lead to 10-1 by the top of the sixth before Medaille earned two runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings. Garrett Pauly went 6.1 innings (six strikeouts) before Hoak (one strike out) took the mound for the last two outs to secure the win. Jim Pernick went 3 for 3 and earned his three RBIs in the second game. Also, going 2 for 4 were: Hoak (triple, 1 RBI), John Babocsi (1 RBI), Pat Lagueras (double, 1 RBI) and Frank Mancuso (2 RBI).
Medaille opened the day scoring five runs off of three hits in the first inning. Hilbert answered scoring two runs of their own and fought back to a 5-3 deficit in the second inning. Medaille got hot in the top of the seventh when they took it to Nick Sherman on the mound. They struck for seven runs to take a commanding 13-3 lead into the bottom of the inning. The ten runs were too much to overcome, although the Hawks finished with three hits in the 7th. Medaille shut the door on the comeback and grabbed the opening game behind Peter Romeo’s bat (4 for 5 with 3 RBIs). Matt Militello hit a long dinger over the right field fence as the Hawks’ second batter which was a nice way to start the game. Joe Pernick went 2 for 4 and Hoak finished with three hits and one run.
The Hawks will do some traveling before returning home to host Houghton College in the last game of the regular season at 1 and 4pm on April 26.
