BOX SCORE
HAMBURG, NY – The Hilbert College men’s lacrosse team lost a NEAC battle versus cross-town rival Medaille College, 15-9, on April 25. After trailing Medaille in the first period, the Hawks played even with them for the remainder of the game, but it wasn’t enough to bring them back from their early deficit. Sean Purtill netted three scores for Hilbert as Brock Levick exploded with seven goals for the Mavericks.
Tyler Straussburg had a hand in all three early Mavericks scores (2g/1a) in the opening period. Purtill finally put the Hawks on the board with 3:27 to go in the first quarter, two minutes before Levick snuck one through the pipes to gain a 4-1 advantage. Purtill scored again to open the second period, but Hilbert did not find another goal until 2:39 to go before intermission. At the half, Medaille was up 7-3.
The second half started with back-to-back goals from Hilbert’s Elliot Russillio and another Purtill goal which cut Medaille's lead to one. The Mavericks responded with three unanswered goals to close out the scoring for the third period.
For every Hilbert score the Mavericks answered back with points of their own in the final 15-minutes. Greg Zitnik, Nick Cavaleri, and Bill Moleins found the back of the net, but several other Hilbert shots hit the pipes and crossbar preventing any come-from-behind victory.
Medaille won the battle of the face-offs (17-9), and also totaled more ground balls for the game (36-28). Hilbert managed to fire off 42 shots at their opponent's net while William Wagner had an impressive 11 saves in the goal for the Hawks.
Hilbert will finish their season April 28 when they travel to Morrisville State (7-0) to challenge the NEAC leaders. The game is set for 5pm.
