HAMBURG, NY – Play was just as exciting and the competition was just as fierce on day two of the Hilbert College women’s volleyball Invitational Tournament. After pool play on Friday, the six teams reshuffled and faced opponents whom they did not play September 14th. No tournament champion was determined, but solid sportsmanship was displayed.
Hilbert and D’Youville faced each other in a non-conference match as an early warm-up to AMCC play in ten days. The Hawks won the first two sets then dropped the third, before they regrouped to claim the match (25-20, 25-23, 21-25, 25-16) to improve to 7-1. Jordan Botsford finished with .231 hitting (8 kills) while Chelsea Reischuck netted 10 kills herself. Devon Jonathan worked the outside earning 9 kills and four digs.
Fredonia and SUNYIT followed the same suit, with Fredonia, the eventual winner, claiming the first, third and fourth sets (25-19, 24-26, 25-12, 25-15). Fourteen Blue Devils saw court time and in a very balanced effort (with four players earning 7 or more kills and another four credited with double digit digs) Fredonia advanced with a clean slate. Kelly Edinger continued to pace the team with 32 assists.
SUNYIT and D’Youville (3-9) ended the tournament with a three set victory for the Spartans from Buffalo (25-17, 25-20, 25-21). SUNYIT ‘s Kaitlyn Harrington finished the match with 8 kills. Harrington, Jessica Sass and Erika Reakes all were credited with 10 digs.
Meanwhile, Keystone and Keuka were playing their first game of the day next door. Keuka opened with a 3-0 victory (25-7, 25-12, 25-12). Three Giants from Keystone finished with double digs, led by Shelby Morgan’s 13 (4 digs).
The last two matches of the tournament pitted Fredonia against Keystone and Hilbert against Keuka. Fredonia went on a service ace tear to capture the match in 3 sets. As a team, the Blue Devils finished with 23 aces en route to the 25-10, 25-10, 25-8 victory. Kaitlin Orcutt personally brought home the second set for Fredonia, and claimed 12 service aces for the match. Keystone’s Laryn Haas secured 10 digs.
Keuka took straights sets from Hilbert to close out tournament play 3-1 elevating their overall record to 7-3. Strong defensive play by the Storm again prevented the Hawks from victory. This was only the second loss the Hawks (7-2) took this season, but both were at the hands of Keuka. Allegra Johnson led at the net with 8 kills, Shannon Memminger with 17 assists and Chelsea Reischuck and Jordan Botsford shared digs at 7 each. Keuka finished with 61 digs as a team with Taylor Smith (21) and Paige Golden (15) credited for more than fifty percent of the team’s total. Devan Curtis served up 5 aces.
Fredonia (5-7) finished the tournament with a 4-0 record, followed by Keuka (7-3) and Hilbert (7-2) at 3-1. D’Youville (3-9) and SUNYIT (1-12) each grabbed one win, while Keystone (0-11) dropped all four matches.
