HAMBURG, NY - Matt Saxton’s goal, in the 75th minute, put a scare in Medaille College who went on to capture a 2-1 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference win over the Hawks in men’s soccer September 25. Hilbert played a competitive game against the 8-1 (2-0) league leaders and had their opportunities to even the score, but time ran out before the Hawks could tie the game.
Medaille opened the scoring just six minutes into the game when Cory Carter netted his third goal of the season. Hilbert played aggressive defense and pushed when they could on offense before intermission. Hilbert had only two fewer shots (10-8) and corner kicks (4-2) than the Mavericks at the break.
Both teams took three shots apiece early in the second half before James Turner connected for Medaille’s eventual game winner at 61:07. Fourteen minutes later Saxton earned his first goal (Mario Williams assist) which gave the Hawks new life. Hilbert attacked offensively, looking to set up their front line for one-on-one break a ways, and they were also solid defensively, interrupting the Maverick passing.
By the final horn, Medaille held a 21-14 shots advantage and 10-5 corner kick lead. Jeremy Kraska was credited with five saves in the loss while Medaille Nick Kurtz made 2.
Hilbert’s next AMCC game is at Pitt-Greensburg September 29 (3pm) following the women’s game.
