KEUKA PARK, NY – In a crazy game where Hilbert appeared to be in total control, maintaining the lead for 38:26 minutes, the Keuka women’s basketball team literally Stormed back to force overtime before they captured a 75-67 non-conference victory over the visitors from Hamburg. On two occasions the game was tied in regulation and only one time, for sixty-five seconds, did Keuka hold a lead. Once the game headed to over time, it wasn’t even a contest as Keuka shot 10-10 from the foul line while Hilbert went three for four. Danielle Gravel led five Keuka players who hit for double digits, scoring 20 points (five assists) in 43 minutes. Jessica Jamison earned 17 points and 12 rebounds (four steals) to lead three Hawks (2-3) who hit for ten points or more.
Sarah Lorusso put Hilbert on the board first at 19:47. Her tough defense led to the game’s first blocked shot before Keuka’s Miriah Mouzon grabbed the deflected ball and created the game’s only tie in the first half. The Hawks put together a good twenty minutes of basketball holding a 41-35 half time lead based on their impressive shooting (48.3%) and aggressive rebounding (25-13 advantage). By half time, eight different Hawks were in the score book with Jamison netting 11 and Natalie Whitman pacing behind with 10 points.
Midway through the second period, Lorusso’s four points fueled a Hilbert 6-0 run stretching the Hawks lead to 55-46 with 9:33 remaining. But Hilbert went cold from the floor allowing Keuka to inch their way back and eventually to take their first (and only lead) in regulation off a Mouzon lay-up at 2:57. Jamison hit a timely three-point bucket to give the Hawks a two point lead once again. But nerves got the best of both teams as Hilbert went 0-4 in shot attempts and Keuka was 0-2 at the foul line and 1-3 from the paint. Mouzon’s offensive rebound put-back with 0:03 seconds sent the game to overtime.
Once the five minute overtime period began, both teams made long walks down the court to line up for foul shots. Whitman gave Hilbert their last one-point lead after she hit both her attempts at 2:37 but after that, the Hawks never stepped to the 15 foot stripe again. They watched Keuka make five consecutive trips hitting all ten attempts which put the game out of reach.
Whitman led the Hawks in scoring with 18 points and two assists. Lorusso chipped in 10 points, four steals and six assists. Mouzon knocked in 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds and gets credit for being the player to send the game into overtime. Brittany Headley (11) Erica Pandrak (10) and Jessica Bandrowski (10) all assisted offensively for Keuka.
Hilbert returns to action November 28 when they host cross-town rival D’Youville College in both programs first AMCC contest of the season. Game time is 6pm.
