HAMBURG, NY – In their first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference game of the season, the D’Youville College women’s basketball team took a 73-53 league victory at Hilbert College November 28. Shannon Dougherty led all scorers with 21 points and 10 rebounds to give the Spartans (2-3, 1-0) the nod over Hilbert (2-4, 0-1). Natalie Whitman produced 14 points for the Hawks who, as a team, finished the game with 22 offensive rebounds.
Senior Amber Grosch scored the Hawks first two baskets giving them the lead each time. D’Youville’s Bridget Andrews hit the first of her game-leading five 3’s to give the Spartans their third lead of the game. Hilbert and D’Youville traded baskets for about five minutes before the visitors went on a 17-1 run by 6:16 (33-17).
Hilbert cut the score to 10 points by 18:47, but went cold from the floor for stretches of time during the second half.
Hilbert was 19 for 68 from the floor and 4 of 18 from behind the three-point line. D’Youville shot 35.9% for the game (23-64) but made 11 three-point shots and 16 foul shots. Each team was credited for 51 rebounds.
Grosch finished the game with seven offensive rebounds and was three for four from the foul line for Hilbert. Andrews chipped in 20 points and three assists while Danette Laguerre finished with 10 points and five steals.
Hilbert travels to Steubenville, OH this weekend for their AMCC match against Franciscan University (1-3, 1-0) at 1pm.
