BUFFALO, NY – After suffering through one of their worst shooting performances this season, the Hilbert College men’s basketball team’s second half rally fell short of a complete come-back as the Hawks dropped their first AMCC game of the season at Medaille College December 5. Hilbert outscored the Mavericks in the second half, but they just had too much ground to make up in their 80-70 loss. Dan McFarland’s 19 points and four assists were Hilbert team highs, but Medaille’s Alex Baron took game high scoring honors with 21. Medaille burnt the nets shooting a blazing .605 for the game as they evened their record to 1-1 in AMCC.
Trevor Stark picked-up right where he left off last year in the AMCC play-off game at Medaille. The sophomore was seven for fourteen from the floor chipping in 16 points. 5’8” Anthony Hodge was the game’s leading offensive rebounder (5) while he scored 14 points to go with his seven rebounds. Jerame Owens was one away from a double-double in each column as he finished with nine points and nine rebounds.
Medaille swished their way to a 39-25 half time lead mainly because Hilbert could not buy a basket. The Hawks were nine of thirty-five from the floor, making only one of nine 3-point shots. They didn’t shoot well from the foul line either hitting only six of their eleven attempts. Hilbert did have three fewer turnovers and one more steal than Medaille, but the Mavericks shot .478 field goal percentage.
The old Hilbert returned to the hardwood after the intermission break. Hilbert shot much better from the floor (51.5%), but couldn’t find their long distance shooting touch (1-9) in the tight Sullivan Center on Medaille’s campus. The Hawks got after the offensive glass grabbing 15 boards to keep their offensive drive alive but they also needed to interrupt the Mavericks offense. Medaille somehow improved their field goal percentage to 75% (15-20) the last 20 minutes of the game. Hilbert outscored Medaille by four points in the second half, but they ran out of time for the road win to become a reality.
Hilbert turns around and will host Penn State Altoona December 8th in a 3pm tip. The Lions bring a 3-3, 2-1 AMCC record into the weekend game.
