LA PLUME, PA – The Hilbert College men’s basketball team picked up a big non-conference road win December 12 when they beat Keystone College 75-73. Hilbert never trailed in the game and fought through two late-in-the game ties to improve to 8-2 overall. Anthony Hodge’s lay-up with 0:06 remaining sealed the victory while sophomore Trevor Stark {in photo to right} and senior Isaac Bushey both earned career highs.
Stark scored 27 points with three assists and Bushey netted 16 points and pulled down 12 rebounds while Hodge chipped in 15 points and four assists.
Keystone Mike Kelly led three Giants in double figure scoring with 22 points. Tim Benedix and Duncan Lunsford each hit for 15 points for Keystone (4-5).
After both teams traded baskets early in the game, the Hawks extended their three point lead to nine (14-5 by 13:36) fueled by Trevor Starks’ six point run. Dan McFarland, Hodge and freshman Jerame Owens sprinkled in a few points, but Stark and Bushey were the only scorers for Hilbert the first 20 minutes. The Hawks were up by eight points by half time with Bushey and Stark scoring the same amount of points that Keystone had as a team (34-26).
Hilbert stretched their lead to as high as 11 points at 11:17, but that is when the Giants offense turned up a notch. They went on a nine-point run over the next two and half minutes to cut the difference to just two points (58-56). McFarland and Hodge got the lead back to seven points before Keystone tied the game twice in the final minutes. Hodge's bucket set the 75-73 difference before Keystone's three-point desperation shot fell short at the horn.
Hilbert was consistent from the floor finishing with .444 field goal percentage while Keystone warmed up in the second half (51.1%) to settle for .424. The hosts out rebounded Hilbert by one (46-45) and both teams crashed for 17 offensive boards. Owens finished with double-digit rebounds again (11) for the third time this season. Hilbert continues to take care of the ball on offense as the team was credited with only nine turn overs.
The Hawks return home to the friendly confines of the Hafner Recreation Center Saturday, December 15 when they host Elmira College (0-7) at 3pm.
