HAMBURG, NY – The Hilbert College women’s basketball team suffered two Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference road losses this weekend after they traveled to Mount Aloysius and La Roche Colleges. Mount Aloysius attempted 26 more free throws than the Hawks earning 20 points at the foul line en route to their 71-66 victory January 5th. The next afternoon, Hilbert gave up 81 points to La Roche College, the AMCC defending champions, while notching 29 of their own tallies. The Hawks dropped to 1-5 in league standings and are 3-10 overall.
Jenah Labuski led the Hawks with her first double-double of the season scoring 10 points and pulling down 10 rebounds in the five point loss at Mount Aloysius. Jessica Jamison was five for ten beyond the three-point line, finishing with team-high 20 points while Sarah Lorusso chipped in 13 points and six assists. Natalie Whitman added 12 points and eight rebounds.
After Whitman opened the scoring for Hilbert, the Mounties went on a 7-0 run to take the lead. Hilbert was able to build a five point lead (20-15) by 9:51 after Lorusso dialed up a long distance bomb, but Mount Aloysius closed the first half with a 33-30 advantage. During the first twenty minutes, Hilbert led in field goal percentage (36% - 31%) but turned the ball over 14 times without any attempts at the charity stripe.
Through the second half, there were eight lead changes and the score was tied nine times; the Hawks improved their shooting percentage to 43% and dug down on defense as they held the host team to 27% shooting from the floor. Labuski’s jumper with 2:14 remaining was Hilbert’s last points of the day before the visitors watched the Mounties make seven of eight free throws to claim the victory.
La Roche College led from start to finish when they hosted Hilbert January 6th. The RedHawks improved to 6-0 (11-1 overall) as they forced 35 Hilbert turnovers. Wyann Jackson led the Hawks with nine points shooting 2 for 3 from beyond the three-point line. Whitman followed with eight points and seven rebounds.
