BRADFORD, PA – Hilbert College's second-half rally fell short as they lost a 70-56 AMCC road game to Pitt-Bradford in women’s basketball January 9. Sarah Lorusso finished with 16 points and nine rebounds after distributing four assists in the Hawk loss. Bradford’s Carly Dalton lead all scorers with 18 points as the Panthers jumped to 4-2 in conference standings. Junior Natalie Whitman provided game high rebounds (15) and added 11 points to earn her 5th double-double for Hilbert (1-6).
Bradford forced 21 Hilbert first-half turnovers to build a 35-15 advantage by intermission. Whitman led the Hawks with five points (after attempting only two shots) and grabbed five rebounds. Bradford shot 37 percent from the floor and made eight of 13 foul shots while Hilbert made only five field goals and five free throws.
Bradford padded their lead with five quick second half points before Hilbert found their shooting touch. Back-to-back 3-point shots by Lorusso and Jenah Labuski started the come-back run. After closing the gap by nine points, both teams traded baskets for several minutes until Hilbert broke the ten point difference at 2:49. When the Hawks needed their run to continue, the ball didn’t fall through the net yet Bradford knocked down free throws (5 of 8) and scored layups extending the score by the final horn.
Hilbert finished with 43.2% shooting from the floor, much better than Bradford’s 38% however Bradford outrebound the Hawks by one (40-39), and found 17 steals off the Hawks 32 turnovers.
Hilbert returns to the friendly confines of the Hafner Recreation Center Saturday, January 12 when they host Pitt-Greensburg with a 2pm start.
