MARCY, NY – After earning 26 kills in the Hawks’ season opening matches at the SUNYIT Tournament, junior Adam Weaver inched closer to the top spot as the All-Time Kill leader in Hilbert’s men’s volleyball program. The Hawks split their first day matches, falling 3-0 to Elms College before they took a commanding 3-0 victory over Bard College (United Volleyball Conference league member). Weaver finished the day with 4.33 kills per set and David Mellerski, assuming the quarterback position this year, assisted on 42 of the team’s 44 assists to average 7.00 aps. Freshman Korey Schwab added 14 digs and Ryan Ratajczak helped with 13 digs in the back line. At the net, Fred Sickau earned 7 blocks (1.17 bps). The Hawks finished the evening with a .180 hitting percentage, 10.50 digs per set and 8 service aces.
Hilbert put up a good fight against Elms (2-0) in sets one and three (25-23, 25-17, 26-24). Weaver finished with 10 kills (.267) and Ratajczak earned 5 digs in that opening match of the season. Sickau and Anthony Blasz each netted 5 kills with Mellerski assisting 18 times. Elms ended the match hitting .162 at the net even though the Hawks earned 5 blocks.
Hilbert jumped out early and cruised to the (25-18, 25-15, 25-20) non-conference match against Bard, who was picked to finish ahead of Hilbert in the UVC poll this spring. Weaver earned 16 kills (.464) and 7 digs while Sickau was credited for 8 kills offensively. Ratajczak had 13 digs and Mellerski assisted 24 times and had 4 blocks. Hilbert hit .269 as a team and was credited for 40 digs.
Weaver only needs 12 kills to become the Hawks All Time Kills leader.
Hilbert squares off against SUNYIT and Sage College January 26th.
Hilbert returns to WNY but travels to D’Youville College January 31 looking to capture their opening UVC contest at 7pm.
