GREENSBURG, PA – The Hilbert College women’s basketball team suffered a 66-50 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference loss February 9. With the win, Greensburg (9-7) assured themselves a spot in the AMCC play-offs which begin in nine days. Hilbert dropped to 1-15 and will continue to act as the spoiler in their remaining two games this season.
Both Hilbert’s Natalie Whitman and Greensburg’s Emily Nelson took top scoring honors with 19 points and Whitman cleared the glass for 11 boards, earning her eighth double-double this season.
Hilbert jumped out to any early lead scoring twice after their first three possessions. Greenburg pulled back on defense and put together a short run to grab the lead at 16:38. Both teams traded baskets and leads for the next 11 minutes until the Bobcats made a 6-0 run to build a 23-17 score and carried it to half time.
Hilbert shot 29.6% from the field and 41.7% from the charity stripe. Whitman (8), Sarah Lorusso (6) and Jenah Labuski (5) tallied all but three of the Hawks first half points.
Courtney Coots’ {in photo} jumper at 15:55 cut the Bobcats lead to 33-29 but that was as close as the Hawks would get in the second half. Greensburg turned up the heat, scored 8 straight points and built a double-digit lead which they would never relinquish the rest of the contest.
Hilbert was credited with 44 rebounds, two less than Greensburg, but the Hawks gave up 22 offensive boards which lead to 15 second chance points for the Bobcats. The Hawks finished with 5 blocks but their 28 turnovers equated to Greensburg’s 26 points off turnovers.
Labuski, Lorusso and Kateland Ball netted 8 points each. Labuski finished with 2 blocks and 6 rebounds while Coots led the Hawks with 3 assists and added 2 blocks. Lorusso swiped 3 steals.
Hilbert finishes their season this week with home games against Penn State Behrend (2/13) and they will celebrate Amber Grosch’s senior day against La Roche College (2/19).
