BUFFALO, NY – Hilbert College surrendered a 4-set loss to Vassar College in men’s volleyball on day two of the United Volleyball Conference cross-over matches hosted by Medaille College February 10. Vassar finished the weekend 2-1 and Hilbert fell to 1-3 overall after splitting yesterday’s league games against Bard and NYU.
Korey Schwab {white jersey in photo} earned his best hitting percentage with 7 kills (.417) and added 5 digs Sunday. Adam Weaver led with 10 kills and 2 service aces. David Mellerski ended with 22 assists and 9 digs while Ryan Ratajczak {red jersey in photo} was credited with 11 digs.
The Brewers used a balance attack, inserting 16 players in the match. Joe Pyne and Matt Elgin paced Vassar with 13 and 10 kills respectively and Colin White-Dzuro had 21 assists, just ahead of Joh Konow’s 18.
Vassar broke free from a 10-10 tie in the first set and surged ahead 21-14 on the strength of their hitting. The set was only tied twice and it was Vassar's best hitting performance of the match at .423 (14-3-26). Hilbert couldn't close the gap, with Pyne earning Vassar's last three kills.
The second set was more competitive, tied five times, the last coming at 20-20 when Hilbert's Ratajczak connected on an attempt. Vassar won the next two points, forcing the Hawks to call timeout. A Hilbert attack error gave Vassar a 23-20 lead and back to back kills secured the 21-25 win and a 2-0 lead for Vassar.
In the third set, Vassar suffered its worst attack set of the match, resulting in a 25-13 Hilbert victory. The Brewers hit just .186 (12-6-33) and the Hawks had their best offensive set, hitting .619 (12-0-19). Vassar was down from the outset and Hilbert cruised.
Vassar hit .500 (14-2-24) and Hilbert dipped to -.158 (3-6-19) in the fourth set allowing the Brewers to coast to a 25-9 victory.
Hilbert travels to Thiel College February 12 before they return home to the Hafner Valentine’s Day when they host Medaille College with a 7 pm start time.
