AURORA, NY – The Hilbert College men’s volleyball team pulled together and claimed an impressive non-conference 3-1 win over Wells College before they surrendered a three sets loss to Thiel College March 30. The Hawks (6-19) were led by Anthony Blasz’s .280 hitting and Scott Ross’ 17 kills. Sophomore David Mellerski assists 56 times, earned three service aces and matched senior Fred Sickau’s 2 solo blocks. Senior Adam Clabo’s 13 digs lead four players who all reached double-digits on the day.
Hilbert opened the day beating Wells in close sets (26-24,25-18,23-25,25-23). The Hawks hit .107 and earned 8 service aces. Sickau, Mellerski, Korey Schwab and Ryan Ratajczak each struck twice along the way. Clabo led with 9 digs and Ross and Sickau reached double-digit kills, with 11, and 10 respectively.
Thiel jumped to (25-18,25-19,25-17) set scores as they moved to 17-8 overall. Blasz finished with 5 kills (.231) and 3 blocks. Ross added 6 kills and led with a team-high 7 digs. Mellerski passed for 21 assists.
The Hawks close out their season with two home games. Penn State Behrend travels to Hamburg for a rematch against the Hawks April 3rd before the Hawks celebrate senior night April 9th in their rematch with Thiel College.
