BUFFALO, NY – After giving up 11 first-half goals to Medaille, the Hilbert College women’s lacrosse team played even the second half, matching all 7 scores by the host team. Sarah Lorusso earned 8 points, 3 ground balls and 6 draw-controlls in the Hawks 18-10 loss at All High Stadium. Harlie Decker added 3 goals for the 1-5 Hawks. Emily Brophy led the 2-1 Mavericks with 5 goals and 4 assists.
Maria Delmonaco and Lorusso set the tone early for Hilbert. By 24:14, the Hawks held a 2-0 lead. Medaille stormed back and scored just as quickly sneaking 5 balls past Hilbert’s Meghan Stewart to go up 5-2 at 17:13.
Nicole Blair earned an unassisted goal giving Hilbert 3 points before Medaille went on mini-scoring spurts as they scored 2 goals less than 60 seconds apart twice before taking an 11-3 half time lead.
With just fourteen seconds clicking off the game clock to start the second half, Lorusso beat Brittany Lucas for her 15th goal of the season. The Mavericks responded with 4 goals to take a 15-5 hold on the game.
At 12:39, Lorusso scored again and, just four seconds later, Decker won the draw control and traveled the length of the field for a quick score. Decker found the back of the net again just four minutes later before Lorusso and Decker hooked up again, this time eighteen seconds apart. Lorusso finished the Hawks scoring when she beat the keeper on a free position shot at 2:26.
Hilbert earned 19 ground balls, 11 draw controls and converted both free-position shots. Medaille doubled up Hilbert on shots (29-12) which was a contributing factor to Mavericks victory.
The women’s lacrosse team has just over a week off from completion before they play their next game. Franciscan University will travel to Hamburg for a 12 pm contest on the varsity field on campus April 13.
