Game One Box Game Two Box
ELMIRA, NY – The Hilbert College softball team hung tough in both games of the double header against Elmira College April 4, but they suffered late inning let-downs which lead to the 8-0 and 4-1 losses. Elmira, hosting the game at Eldridge Park Stadium under the lights, improved to 10-4, and extended their win streak to eight games. Hilbert moved to 2-10 as they head into back-to-back home conference games this weekend.
In game one, both teams played to a scoreless four innings. Then in the bottom of the 5th, the Soaring Eagles hit stride and scored three quick runs before they closed out the game in the 6th with five more. Hilbert’s Devan Jonathan tossed 5.2 innings with two walks and no strike outs while Elmira’s Puglisi went the full game with 11 strikeouts and no walks. Brittany Hancy lead off the top of the 4th inning with the team’s only hit and was left stranded on base.
In the second game Elmira built a 2-0 lead after two innings, but Hilbert responded defensively and quieted their bats. In the top of the 6th, Hilbert had its best chance for a comeback which started with an Amber Grosch single. Eliza Stringham followed with a double to right field which moved Grosch to third. With the winning run at the plate, Elmira brought back in their ace-pitcher to finish the inning. Kayla Lansberry was thrown out at first after attempting to send Grosch home on a bunt forcing the runners to hold their bases. It was a pass ball that brought Grosch home and moved Stringham to third. A Katie Pettis walk kept the rally alive before Kateland Ball popped up to the catcher and Olivia Battle struck out swinging. Hilbert went three up, three down in the top of the 6th to lose the night cap, 4-1.
Hilbert has one day off to prepare for the AMCC double header games against La Roche (4/6, 1pm) and Penn State Behrend (4/7, 1pm) this weekend. Both games will be played at Hilbert College on the varsity softball field. Follow the front page of the website for any rain-related changes.
