ERIE, PA – After re-arranging their game schedule to get the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference game in, the Hilbert College baseball team traveled to northwest PA to face Penn State Behrend in their second set of AMCC games April 4. The Hawks challenged late in the opening game before they lost, 5-1. By the top of the 3rd inning in the second game, Hilbert found themselves down 10-1 as they limped to a 16-2 conference loss.
Behrend (11-5, 2-0) opened the day scoring four second inning runs off five hits. The Lions crossed home again in the bottom of the third then their bats cooled off.
Paul Mistretta hit the Hawks only double to start what felt like a 7th inning rally with Hilbert down 5-0. Mistretta was knocked home by John Babocsi, who earned the Hawks only RBI in 1st game. Ryan Ilardi reached on a fielder’s choice forcing Tom Irish out at 2nd for the Hawks second out of the inning. Before the next better could swing, Behrend’s catcher and second basemen tagged out Ilardi who was caught stealing to end the inning and game.
Garrett Pauly took the loss going the full distance striking out 4 while giving up 10 hits.
The wheels fell off the wagon early in the night cap with Behrend taking a 10-1 lead after two innings. Each team saw multiple pitching changes as the game progressed. Four Hawk hurlers saw action on the mound with Colby Parachoniak going the last two innings giving up three hits but no runs. Frank Casey took the mound to close out the second inning and lasted two outs into the third to earn the Hawks only strike-out. Behrend kept their bull pen active moving a new pitcher in each inning. Conversely, the Lions pitching staff combined for 11 strike-outs with Jacobs earning the win.
After Babocsi and Mark Anderson each singled to get on base, Tony Mara earned an RBI to give Hilbert their first run of the second game in the 2nd inning. Paul Wujek swung for a double in the third inning which pushed Cody Asford to third base before Joe Pernick hit into an out. Pernick earned the RBI to give Hilbert their second and final run of the day.
Hilbert (1-14, 1-3) turns around and travels to Batavia, NY on April 5 for a non-conference game against Houghton College which will be played at Dwyer Stadium, home of the Batavia Muckdogs. Game time for the 9-innning game is set for 7 pm.
Then on April 6th, the Hawks will bus to Pittsburgh, PA for their 1pm double header, AMCC game at La Roche College.
