BATAVIA, NY – Hilbert College and Houghton College rescheduled their non-league baseball game to an evening affair under the lights at Dwyer Stadium for academic reasons, and, even with the bitter cold, the game was worth the drive.
Houghton, as the visiting team, exploded for eight 1st inning runs and continued to pad their lead in five of the six following innings. The Highlands took a 24-5 victory pushing Hilbert to 1-15 overall as they improved to 5-10.
Hilbert’s Joe Pernick drove in two runs with two hits while Paul Mistretta and Ryan Ilardi added an RBI each. Cody Ashford {in photo} finished with two hits (one RBI), a stolen base and closed the game in the 7th inning on the mound facing two batters and striking them both out.
The Hawks used five guys in their bull pen with Andrew Cartaginese tossing three full innings and striking out four.
Ignacio Vilalobos reached for two doubles, with 7 RBIs to lead Houghton in their 47 at-bats. The Highlanders finished the game with 4 doubles in their 21 hits.
